Ring Ray Resection

James H. Calandruccio, MD, Sergio Pinto, MD, Mike Calfee MD, Germantown, TN

Amputation of dysfunctional ring fingers can significantly compromise hand function when bone remnants are maintained. Ring finger ray amputation by metacarpal-hamate carpometacarpal joint disarticulation has previously been reported only as a surgical technique or as isolated case reports. A series of five consecutive patients were observed to have progressive radialization of the ring finger base on the hamate facet. Cosmetic acceptance was excellent and the grip and pinch strengths were 62 and 94%, respectively. No scizzoring or secondary procedures were necessary aside from more proximal resection of an extensor tendon stump in one patient. The subjective and objective results of this patient series supports ring finger carpometacarpal joint disarticulation as a primary procedure for certain ring finger disorders.
