The incidence of articular cartilage injury is increasing rapidly in our society. Recent non-surgical and surgical advances as well as time-tested treatment options are now available for the practicing orthopaedist. This symposium will review the current knowledge on the topic of articular cartilage injury and the knowledge on the topic of articular cartilage injury and the conservative and operative options which are available. A review of the literature and current clinical and surgical indications and results will be covered in depth by each presenter.

The first of four lectures will review the basic science of articular cartilage injury and the available non-operative options. The second lecture will address the traditional operative treatment options including abrasion chondroplasty, mosaicplasty, and microfracture. The third lecture will discuss the newer non-operative and operative treatment options including thermal modification, autologous chondrocyte implantation and osetochondral allograft techniques, as well as future directions. The final lecture will review the post-operative care of these patients and will be followed by a short panel discussion with questions and answers.
